The Not So Sweet Truth About Artificial Sweeteners

When I was a child I was told, “eating too much sugar will rot your teeth.” Well… it seems that using artificial forms of sugar will rot the rest of your body. High fructose corn syrup and aspartame are common sweeteners found in almost every processed food in your local supermarket. Learn what they are, where they are, and what effects they have on your body. Are they in your kitchen?

High Fructose Corn Syrup

What is it?
High-fructose corn syrup is made by changing the sugar (glucose) in cornstarch to fructose — another form of sugar. The end product is a combination of fructose and glucose.

Where is it?
HFCS is found in almost all foods containing caloric sweeteners. These include most soft drinks, fruit drinks, candied fruits, canned fruits, dairy desserts, flavored yogurts, most baked goods, many cereals, and jellies.

Why is it in everything?
It tastes sweeter, extends the shelf life of processed foods, enhances baking properties, is easier to add to beverages, and is cheaper than sucrose (table sugar). The price difference between table sugar and HFCS is due to high tariffs placed on sugar produced in other countries.

World refined sugar price: 11 cents per pound

US refined sugar price: 28 cents per pound

HFCS price: 14 cents per pound

What’s the effect on your body?
Regularly including these products in your diet has the potential to promote obesity — which, in turn, promotes conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and coronary artery disease.

Research insists that fructose stimulates less insulin and leptin secretion than glucose and is excluded from entering brain cells. Therefore, excessive fructose ingestion may result in blunting the body’s ability to recognize when it is full, making a person want to eat more.

Aspartame

What is it?
Aspartame is a low-calorie sweetener approximately 180 to 200 times sweeter than sucrose. It is composed of two amino acids, aspartic acid and phenylalanine, as the methyl ester.

Where is it?
Aspartame is sold under the brand names Nutra-Sweet and Equal and is found in such popular products as Diet Coke, Diet Pepsi, Diet Snapple and Sugar Free Kool-Aid. It is an ingredient of approximately 6,000 consumer foods and beverages sold worldwide, including (but not limited to) diet sodas and other soft drinks, instant breakfasts, breath mints, cereals, sugar-free chewing gum, cocoa mixes, frozen desserts, gelatine desserts, juices, laxitives, multivitamins, milk drinks, pharmaceutical drugs and supplements, shake mixes, tabletop sweeteners, teas, instant coffees, topping mixes, wine coolers and yogurt.

What’s the effect on your body?
Research has found that the sweetener was associated with unusually high rates of lymphomas, leukemia and other cancers.

I have been talking about eating right and putting natural foods into our temples since I've been on the Tiger Roundup site but people say I talk about it too much. I guess I should write about the soap operas. Seriously though, I have stressed healthy products but everyone thinks I'm trying to sell them on something. I am! Better health for you and your family members! If that is a crime, then I'm guilty. My wife no longer takes blood pressure pills and that is a blessing! Love to you all!
