Alumni Roundup, OhPsalms, and Will Power Packer came together to produce the 3rd official installment of Roundup Rendezvous this June, 2010. Together we produced an AMAZING 4 days of sun, fun, fitness, and of course the best nightlife the city of Miami had to offer. From venue to venue our guests partied in the hottest spots in the city, from LIV to Lincoln Road, Wet Willies, to our private waterfront mansion.

Our sponsors Under Armour, and Grey Goose provided services that pushed our schedule beyond everyone’s expectations. The HBCU love was ever present in the air, and the nearly 300 guests that joined us overwhelmingly have positive stories to tell. There are a few below:

Where shall I start?

First, I’ll say this. Domestic violence is a crime. I do not, have not, and will not condone violence against any innocent man, woman nor child.

If you will, please indulge me for a moment. I’d like to offer a comparison. A comparison between singer Chris Brown and actor Charlie Sheen. I chose Charlie for my comparison because he too, was recently arrested for assaulting a woman, his wife…on Christmas Day; just 6 months ago. Read the rest of this entry »

Power Weekend Miami

April 19th marked the 15th anniversary of the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah building in Oklahoma City by Timothy McVeigh. While many gathered on that day to commemorate that tragic event, the act and others like it, continue to shed light on a fundamental hypocrisy in American society. The hypocrisy in question is the refusal of the American public to apply the term “terrorist” to anyone other than Black or Middle Eastern, Islamic radicals.

The lack of application of the term “terrorist” to Americans or Christians is certainly not due to a lack of evidence. For example, it would not be hard to recognize the brutal and destructive nature of slavery in America as institutionalized terrorism.  Just as easy would be a recognition that groups like the Ku Klux Klan and other Christian-based, White supremacist organizations have repeatedly engaged in terrorist acts. Add to this list the lynching of Black people and the genocide of Native Americans and we soon realize that domestic terrorism in the United States is as American as apple pie.

The NEW New Year

The birds are a little louder, the sun is a little brighter, and the tissue box is only half full. For those of us in the northern hemisphere, Spring has arrived! At the equinox, when the sun crosses directly over the Earth’s equator, most of us gladly welcome the changing season, after a winter that was much too long, harsh and frigid.

For many cultures around the world, this season symbolizes awakenings and new beginnings. Read the rest of this entry »

March 14, 2010 will commemorate my 20th year as a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. As the cliché goes, I can remember “crossing over” it as if it were yesterday. Like some people that pledge a Greek Letter Organization, and unlike others, I had no idea of what fraternity life on a Black College campus meant. Technically, I didn’t know anything about fraternities and sororities on any level.

I guess in an odd way, my first “real” introduction to fraternities was through the viewing of Spike Lee’s part satire, part musical, part drama, School Daze. I can remember leaving the theater in 1988 after seeing the movie my senior year of high school with one prevailing thought: “I will never pledge anything!!” For those who have never seen the movie there are a lot of sub-plots, but one of the main components of the story centers on the G-Phi-G pledgee known as Half-Pint. Half-Pint (played by Lee) had to follow the bizarre orders of the “big brothers” to pledge the fraternity, which would then open the proverbial “college golden gates” where cool points, hot women and status reside.

If situations dictate actions, what are the consequences of inactivity? This question is more relevant today than it has ever been for the Black community. Here’s another pertinent question, are we a dead people?

How can a people be dead you may ask? If by dead we mean “unresponsive”, no longer “significant”, “stagnant”, “without resonance”, “inactive” or “no longer productive”, can the Black community then be considered dead? Some examples may prove instructive.

The power to define is one of the hallmarks of an independent people. It speaks directly to the issue of control. As a community what or who controls our everyday thoughts and ideas? Are we programmed by the packaged stories and images from the corporate controlled media, which in turn renders us “no longer productive” of our own thoughts? Read the rest of this entry »
