HAMPTON — Hampton University President William Harvey was appointed chairman of the President’s Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities during a White House event Friday.

President Barack Obama appointed Harvey to the position after signing an executive order for the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

The order provides $98 million in new funding for HBCUs and makes more money available to all college students who qualify for Pell Grants, according to BlackAmerica Web.com

Harvey said in a statement Friday that he applauds Obama for his vision and emphasis on the role that HBCUs play in America.

“I look forward to serving his administration and working with other members of the Advisory Board to advance the cause of education, research and public service,” he said.

The nearly $400 million in increased funds for Pell Grants is expected to find its way to students at HBCUs, according to John S. Wilson, executive director of the White House Initiative on HBCU. He added that the money outlined in the executive order is contingent upon the passage of Obama’s 2011 budget.

While attending HIU, I disagreed with many things that administration did and planned to do. I do understand that it was for the greatest good, however I’m not sure if the reward of national notoriety and power offsets the costs to the current students and alumni due to Hampton’s rigidness and conservative views.
